Bremerton, on the Kitsap Peninsula across Sinclair Inlet from Seattle, took its name from William Bremer, a German immigrant who had platted the town in the 1890s, and by 1913 its fortunes rested almost entirely on the Puget Sound Navy Yard. The yard, established on Sinclair Inlet in 1891, employed a large share of the town's workers in its shops, dry docks and foundries, and ferries carried commuters and sailors across the water to Seattle and other Sound towns. Civic life centered on the yard's schedules, its shipbuilding and repair work, and the steady arrival and departure of warships. Frank H. Nowell's panorama captures a community that understood itself through the navy's presence, with the shoreline and waterfront work shaping daily routines.
