Bremerton, Washington, in 1911 was a young town built around the Puget Sound Navy Yard on Sinclair Inlet, across Puget Sound from Seattle. The navy yard, established in 1891, employed a large share of the local workforce, and its work set the rhythm of daily life for families living on the hillsides above the docks. The town took its name from William Bremer, a German immigrant who had laid out the townsite and promoted it as a home for workers at the yard. Passenger steamers and ferries carried commuters and freight between Bremerton and Seattle, tying the community to the larger city. Residents would have known Bremerton first as a navy town, with its fortunes rising and falling alongside the yard's appropriations.
