Spokane, Washington, in 1911 was a rebuilt city, still recovering its footing after the 1889 fire had destroyed much of its downtown and led residents to rebuild in brick and stone. Its economy rested on lumber, flour milling along the Spokane River falls, and its position as a rail hub, where Northern Pacific and Great Northern lines met the wheat and timber country of the interior. The Monroe Street Bridge, completed that year, carried traffic across the river gorge into the north side and marked the city's push to link its growing neighborhoods. For residents, the falls and the gorge were the reason the town existed, and a new span across them signaled that Spokane expected to keep growing.
