In 1911 Spokane was still a rail and milling city of the interior Northwest, and its population had climbed past 100,000 by the 1910 census. Wheat from the Inland Empire moved through its elevators and freight yards, while lumber and flour from the falls on the Spokane River went out by rail to markets in the East and on the coast. The city had only recently ended a tense free speech fight, in which police arrested hundreds of Industrial Workers of the World organizers who had tried to address crowds on downtown street corners in 1909 and 1910. Residents of the period would have judged the town by its streets of substantial brick and stone, and by the steady stream of trains bringing newcomers and freight to the depots below the bluffs.
