In 1911 Washington State was building much of its wealth on timber, and the old-growth forests of the Puget Sound country and the Olympic Peninsula fed sawmills and shingle mills from Tacoma to Everett. Steam logging railroads hauled out Douglas fir and western red cedar, and the lumber shipped by rail and sea to California, the Midwest and overseas buyers. Seattle, which had grown fast after the Klondike gold rush of 1897 and 1898, served as the main outfitting and shipping city for this trade. Loggers living in camps far from town knew these giant trees as their livelihood, even as cutting pushed steadily deeper into the woods. The title's phrase, monarchs of the forest, suggests how many residents still regarded the wild timber as nearly endless.
