Tacoma in 1908 was one of the busiest port and industrial cities on Puget Sound, shaped by the Northern Pacific Railway, which had made it the western terminus of its main line in 1887 and built a large shop complex and a deep-water harbor there. Lumber mills, smelters, flour mills, and shipyards lined the tideflats, and the Tacoma Smelter was among the largest of its kind in the country. The city had grown quickly from a few thousand residents in the 1880s to roughly 80,000 by the time this view was taken, and its downtown bluff was crowded with banks, hotels, and office blocks. Residents often compared their town with Seattle, and the rivalry over trade, rail connections, and the Port of Tacoma ran through civic debates of the day.
