Stehekin River, at the northern end of Lake Chelan in north-central Washington, is pictured in 1908, a time when the valley was reached mainly by water. Steamboats working the long, narrow lake carried mail, freight, and passengers between the lakeshore towns and the upper valley, and a trail network linked the isolated settlements. Life there revolved around small farms and orchards, where settlers grew fruit and sold what they could to the lake trade, while the broader Chelan region drew miners and prospectors into the surrounding mountains. For people living in the valley, the river and the lake were the highway, the post, and the market all at once, and the mountains around them set the limits of daily life.
