Lake Chelan, Washington, in 1908 lay deep in the Cascade Mountains, a long glacial lake running nearly fifty miles from the small town of Chelan at its lower end. Steamboats were the district's lifeline, carrying freight, mail and passengers up the water to mining camps and scattered ranches, because no railroad reached the upper lake. Down the valley toward the Columbia, growers were turning irrigated benches into apple and pear orchards, a shift that drew new settlers and tied the local economy to the fruit trade. Prospectors working the surrounding peaks and the busy landings along the shore gave the lake the rough, unfinished character of a frontier still being mapped.
