Spokane, Washington, in 1908 was a city rebuilt after disaster: a fire in 1889 destroyed much of its downtown, and the replacement brick and stone buildings gave it the solid look seen in photographs of the period. The falls of the Spokane River powered sawmills and flour mills, and the Northern Pacific and Great Northern railroads carried lumber, Palouse wheat, and ore from the mining districts of northern Idaho to market. Residents knew the city as the commercial center of the Inland Empire, the interior region east of the Cascades. This 1908 panorama of Davenport Rest shows one part of that growing city, when its fortunes still rose and fell with the rail lines and the river.
