Mount Rainier from Eagle Peak, Washington, 1908, shows a landscape that Puget Sound communities had long treated as their own. In 1908 the mountain was already a national park, established in 1899, and it drew growing numbers of visitors from Tacoma and Seattle by rail and by the new roads and trails leading into the Cascades. Those cities were built on lumber, shipping, and the rail lines of the Northern Pacific, and the Klondike gold rush of 1897 and 1898 had recently sent money and outfitters through Seattle. The Mountaineers, a climbing and outdoor club founded in Seattle in 1906, was then drawing hikers and climbers into the high country. For residents of the region, Rainier was less a scenic backdrop than a symbol of the wilderness just beyond the mills and docks.
