Mount Rainier from Iron Mountain, Washington, 1907, shows a region whose economy rested on timber, shipping, and the rail lines that carried both out of the Puget Sound country. Tacoma, the closest sizable city to the mountain, had grown into a port and industrial center after the Northern Pacific Railway reached it in 1887, and its sawmills and smelter drew workers from across the state. Mount Rainier had been set aside as a national park in 1899, so by 1907 visitors from Tacoma and Seattle were already reaching its slopes by train and stagecoach, treating the peak as a scenic destination as well as a landmark. For most residents of the Puget Sound towns, the mountain was simply the great white presence on the eastern horizon, visible on clear days from streets, wharves, and hillsides.
