Mount Rainier, Washington, in 1925 was a national park that had been set aside in 1899, and by the mid-1920s it drew a growing number of summer visitors from Tacoma, Seattle, and across the Northwest. Most came by automobile on the park's roads, which had improved over the previous decade, and many stayed at the Paradise Inn, which had opened near the mountain's southern slopes in 1916. The park's glaciers and meadows, along with the mountain's snowfield, were the main attractions, and summer visitors often hiked and photographed the views. Local business leaders in Tacoma promoted the mountain as a regional landmark, and the park's appeal fed a broader interest in outdoor recreation that was spreading through the state in the years after the First World War.
