Seattle in 1926 was a city of several hundred thousand people, still living off the sawmills, shipyards, and fish canneries that lined Elliott Bay and the Duwamish River. Lumber remained the backbone of its economy, and steamers bound for Alaska's salmon canneries drew crews and supplies from the waterfront each spring. National Prohibition was in force, and the saloons of the earlier boom years had given way to speakeasies, dance halls, and bootlegging that kept city police busy. Residents knew Seattle as a working port of loggers, longshoremen, and sea captains, where the rhythm of daily life followed the tides, the mills, and the Alaska trade.
