Green Lake, on the north side of Seattle, was a summer destination for city residents in 1907, when the lakeshore drew families for picnics, bathing, and boating. Seattle was growing fast that decade, pushed by its role as the main outfitting port for the Klondike gold rush a few years earlier and by a steady flow of new arrivals. Electric streetcar lines carried people out from downtown to the lake, which made it an easy outing for working families as well as the prosperous households building homes nearby. The city's economy rested on shipping, lumber, and trade through Elliott Bay, and in 1907 Seattle was preparing for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition set for 1909.
