Taken in 1907, this view shows the interior of the Olympic Mountains on Washington's northwest peninsula, a region that was still mostly wilderness to the people of Seattle and Tacoma. Logging was the economic engine of the surrounding area, with sawmills and camps tied to Puget Sound shipping and the timber trade that had grown steadily since the 1880s. Federal protection was a fresh and contested idea here: President Grover Cleveland had set aside the Olympic Forest Reserve in 1897, and local settlers and loggers argued over how much of the land should stay closed to cutting. The Romans Photographic Company, a Seattle firm, made many views of the Northwest for commercial and promotional use, and this scene reflects a time when the mountains were valued both as raw resource and as scenery worth showing off.
