Spokane, Washington, in 1919 was a city of about 100,000 people, built around the falls of the Spokane River and the railroad yards that tied it to the Inland Empire wheat country and the mining districts of northern Idaho. Lumber and flour milling along the river had long driven its economy, and the mining exchange downtown traded shares in silver and lead companies. The business district had been rebuilt in brick and stone after the Great Fire of 1889, and that downtown was the skyline residents knew. In 1919 the city was still recovering from the influenza epidemic of 1918 and the end of the war, and hospitals such as Sacred Heart, run by the Sisters of Providence, were busy with patients.
