Walter Reed Army Hospital in northwest Washington, D.C., photographed in 1919, was named for Major Walter Reed, the Army surgeon whose yellow fever experiments had helped establish how the disease spread. The hospital had opened only a decade earlier, and in 1918 and 1919 its wards filled with soldiers stricken by the influenza pandemic, along with men returning wounded or ill from the fighting in France. The Armistice of November 1918 ended the war, but the hospital's work continued through the demobilization that followed, when many servicemen passed through Army medical care before going home. For Washingtonians, the grounds were a familiar landmark on the city's northern edge.
