Seattle hosted the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition from June to October 1909, with its grounds laid out on the University of Washington campus along the shore of Union Bay. The fair grew out of the city's role as the main outfitting port for prospectors bound for the Klondike and Alaska after 1897, and it promoted Seattle as the gateway to Alaskan and Pacific trade. Only two decades earlier, the 1889 Great Seattle Fire had destroyed much of the downtown, and the city had rebuilt quickly on a larger scale. By 1909 its population had climbed steadily through the decade, and residents took pride in showing visitors a booming port with lumber mills, shipping, and fishing fleets.
