Bellingham in 1909 was a young city on Bellingham Bay, formed only a few years earlier by joining several smaller waterfront towns, including Whatcom, Sehome, and Fairhaven. Its economy rested on sawmills, shingle mills, salmon canneries, and coal from nearby mines, with ships loading lumber and goods at the bay's docks. The Great Northern Railway had reached the city, linking it to Seattle, the Puget Sound towns, and the wider country, and that connection drove steady growth in population and new building. Holly Street was the commercial spine of the downtown, where merchants, bankers, and hotel keepers served loggers, mill hands, and farm families from the surrounding valleys. Residents in 1909 would have known the town as a busy port and mill center still competing with its neighbors for prominence along the northwest coast.
