Mount Vernon, the seat of Skagit County in northwestern Washington, sat on the Skagit River in 1909 as a town built on farming, logging, and river trade. Its bottomland fields supported dairy herds and grain, while nearby timber camps fed sawmills and shingle mills that shipped their output by river and rail. The Great Northern Railway had reached the valley in the early 1890s, giving farmers and loggers a connection to Seattle and wider markets. Residents knew the town as the county's government and trading center, where courthouse business, church life, and weekend trips in from outlying farms set the rhythm of the week. This panorama looks east over that working landscape of streets, rooftops, and river country.
