Seattle in 1917 was a busy port city on Puget Sound, and its waterfront served as the gateway for lumber, coal, fish, and shipping bound for Alaska and the Pacific. The city had grown rapidly since the Klondike and Alaska gold rushes of the late 1890s, and by the time of the First World War its population had passed 300,000 residents. Ships tied up at piers along Elliott Bay, while the city's streetcar lines and the rail connections of the Great Northern and Northern Pacific carried goods and workers between the docks and the mills. Wartime demand for shipping and timber kept the harbor active, and the waterfront was where many Seattle residents went to work, watch the vessels come and go, and see the city's growing commercial ambitions on display.
