Tacoma in 1901 was a young city on Commencement Bay whose fortunes rested on the railroads and the waterfront. The Northern Pacific had chosen Tacoma as its Pacific terminus in 1873, and its western headquarters and rail yards shaped the town's growth, while lumber mills, shingle works, and the deep harbor drew sawmill workers and shipping. The population had climbed quickly during the 1880s and 1890s, and by the turn of the century the city was sending timber and wheat to markets across the Pacific. The waterfront shown here, with its wharves and shipping, was the working edge of a town that would have known itself chiefly as a port and a railroad city.
