Tacoma in 1913 was a Puget Sound port on Commencement Bay, with an economy built on lumber mills, the copper smelter on the tideflats, and the Northern Pacific shops that dated to its years as the railroad's western terminus. The Milwaukee Road had reached the city in 1909, adding a second major line to the waterfront. Washington women had won the vote in 1910, and civic life was lively. This photograph shows the annual exhibition of the Tacoma public schools, where student work was likely put on view for parents and school officials. Such displays signaled civic pride in a city that had grown quickly since the 1880s.
