Seattle in 1929 was a city of roughly 365,000 people, still shaped by its lumber mills, shipping trade with Alaska and the Orient, and the Port of Seattle on Elliott Bay. The city had only recently recovered from the Great Seattle Fire of 1889 and rebuilt on higher ground; by the late 1920s it was ready to assert itself as a regional center, and the Pacific Northwest's fortunes rode on logging, fishing, and Boeing's early aircraft work just across the Lake Washington corridor. The view from the New Washington Hotel looks out over the downtown streets toward the waterfront, where ferries, freight docks, and the rail yards of the period tied the city to the Northern Pacific and Great Northern lines. A few months after this photograph, the stock market crash of October 1929 would begin to cut into the city's shipping and timber earnings.
