Spokane in 1908 was in the middle of a population boom that nearly tripled its size in under a decade, drawing families from the Midwest and the East who came for work in wholesale houses, freight yards, and the building trades. City leaders counted each new arrival as proof that the interior Northwest had a future, and new schools, churches, and brick homes spread up the hills above the central business district. Gonzaga College, the Jesuit school on the north side, drew young men from across the region, while the neighborhoods near the rail yards filled with immigrants from Scandinavia and Germany. Anyone looking out over the rooftops that year would have seen a town still reaching outward, its growth measured in new lots, new houses, and new faces at the depot each week.
