Aberdeen, Washington, in 1911 was a lumber town where the Wishkah and Chehalis rivers meet near Grays Harbor. Its economy rested on logging and sawmills, and cut timber and finished lumber left through the harbor for markets up and down the Pacific coast and overseas. Railroad lines carried logs and lumber in and out, and the town's population had grown quickly since its founding in the 1880s. Mill whistles, wood-frame storefronts, and the steady traffic of loggers and mill hands set the rhythm of daily life, and residents measured their town by its payrolls and the tides.
