Des Moines, the Iowa capital, was growing quickly in 1907, with its population passing 60,000 at the turn of the century and climbing toward 90,000 by the next census. Several railroad lines met in the city, and its insurance companies and state government gave it a steady white-collar base alongside its factories and wholesale trade. Drake University, on the west side of town, had become one of the city's better-known institutions, and athletic grounds like this one drew students, faculty, and local families to watch football and track meets. Sports were a growing part of Midwestern college life in these years, and a crowd on the seats at a campus field would have been a common sight to residents who followed their college teams closely.
