Illinois in 1907 was one of the most industrialized states in the country, with Chicago at the center of its railroads, stockyards, and meatpacking plants, and with coal mines, farm-implement works, and factories spread through towns downstate. Small communities across the state depended on a few large employers, so public events such as company picnics, school celebrations, and local contests drew whole neighborhoods together. A pennant raising like the one shown here was a familiar ceremony in that era, when a banner on a tall pole announced a victory, an achievement, or a claim to local pride.
