In 1907 Chicago was the rail and meatpacking center of the Midwest, with its stockyards and freight yards drawing workers and immigrants from across Europe and the American countryside. Its population had passed two million, and the city was rebuilding its downtown and waterfront after the 1871 fire had leveled much of it. This panoramic photograph records a football game between the Carlisle Indian Industrial School team from Pennsylvania and a Chicago side, played at the Marshall Field grounds. Carlisle, under coach Glenn "Pop" Warner, was one of the best-known college programs of its day and often traveled to face major Midwestern teams, drawing large crowds. For Chicago spectators, the match was a chance to see a nationally famous squad, and the stands filled with students, townspeople, and fans who followed the sport closely.
