Detroit in 1909 was the center of the young American automobile industry, and the city's population had grown quickly as companies such as Packard, Cadillac, and the Olds Motor Works expanded their plants. Ford Motor Company was also building its first cars in the city, and the Model T had appeared the year before. Automobiles were still a novelty for most residents, so the sight of cars gathered together drew large crowds, and the sporting spirit of the era, with its races, reliability runs, and exhibitions, carried over into city streets and nearby roads. Detroiters of that period knew their city as a manufacturing town whose factory payrolls drew workers from across Michigan and from abroad. The panorama captures that moment, when the motorcar was turning from a rich man's toy into a product that would reshape the city.
