Paris in 1909 was the capital of a republic that had been governed since 1870 and was home to roughly 2.8 million people within its city limits. The Seine carried coal, building stone, wine and grain barges through the city, and the wide boulevards Baron Haussmann had cut a generation earlier now carried horse-drawn carts, trams and a growing number of motorcars. The Metro had been running since 1900 and was still extending its lines, while department stores such as the Printemps drew shoppers from across the city. Residents of the period would have known the city by its cafés, its museums and the Eiffel Tower, which had stood on the Champ de Mars since 1889.
