Luxembourg Gardens in Paris in 1909 was a green refuge on the Left Bank, where students from the nearby Sorbonne and families from the surrounding streets came to walk, read, and sit by the Medici Fountain. The gardens took shape in the early 1600s beside the Luxembourg Palace, built for Marie de' Medici, and the palace had long housed the French Senate, so lawmakers crossed the same grounds that nursemaids and schoolchildren used on weekends. Paris was then growing fast, with the Métro running since 1900, and its public parks drew crowds that treated them as part of everyday city life. The clipped chestnut trees, iron chairs, and formal terraces made the gardens a showpiece of French design that Parisians were proud to show visitors.
