In 1909 Paris held nearly three million people, and the Louvre stood on the Seine's right bank as one of the city's great public institutions, having been opened as a museum in 1793. The palace had grown over centuries from a medieval fortress into a royal residence, and it drew steady crowds to its galleries of Renaissance painting and classical sculpture. To the west, the Tuileries Garden and the nearby boulevards carried the city's commercial and social life, while the Métro, opened in 1900, was extending its lines beneath the streets. That summer, Louis Blériot's flight across the English Channel filled Paris newspapers and gave the capital a fresh sense of pride in aviation.
