Place de la Concorde in Paris was in 1909 one of the largest and busiest open squares in Europe, a traffic-clogged junction where the Champs-Élysées, the Tuileries Gardens, and the Seine met. Its name dated only from 1795, when the revolutionary government replaced the royal Place Louis XV, and the square still carried memories of the guillotine that had killed Louis XVI there in 1793. Residents of the city knew it for the Luxor obelisk, raised in 1836, and for the stone statues of French cities that ringed its edge. By 1909 motor cars were beginning to crowd out horse-drawn carriages on these boulevards, while the city's new Métro lines were carrying more passengers each year.
