Paris in 1909 was in the middle of its Belle Époque, a city of roughly three million people that had grown rich on luxury trades, banking, and tourism. The Place de l'Opéra sat at the meeting point of the wide boulevards Baron Haussmann had cut through the old city in the 1850s and 1860s, and it was lined with department stores, cafés, and theaters. Charles Garnier's opera house, finished in 1875, anchored the square and drew audiences from across Europe. Motorcars were beginning to share the roadway with horse-drawn cabs and omnibuses, and the Métro, opened in 1900, carried crowds beneath the boulevards.
