In 1908 the Louvre was in its fifth decade as a public museum, having opened its doors to visitors during the Revolution in 1793, and it stood at the heart of a Paris of nearly three million people. The Third Republic governed the city, and the boulevards Baron Haussmann had cut through the old quarters in the 1850s and 1860s still carried streetcars, carriages, and a growing number of automobiles past the palace's long northern façade along the rue de Rivoli. Across the river, the Grand Palais and Petit Palais, both built for the 1900 Exposition Universelle, drew crowds to art shows and fairs. Paris in those years was known across Europe and America for its fashion, cafés, and galleries, and the Louvre, with its royal collections, was the city's most visited symbol of that prestige.
