Versailles in 1908 was a town of government officials, palace staff, and well-off commuters, lying about 20 kilometers southwest of Paris. Its fortunes were tied to the palace, which had been a national museum since the Revolution and drew visitors from Paris and abroad, and to the rail line that carried daily travelers between the two cities. Under the Third Republic, Versailles was also the seat of the prefecture of Seine-et-Oise, so civic life revolved around the administration, the courts, and the regional offices. Market gardeners on the town's edges still worked the old royal kitchen gardens and supplied produce to Paris, a reminder that the grand estate and ordinary local work stood side by side.
