Thiaucourt, a small town in Lorraine south of Metz, sat on the Woëvre plain, where German troops had held positions since the first months of the war in 1914. By the summer of 1918 it lay within the St. Mihiel salient, a bulge in the Allied lines that the Germans had occupied for four years. In mid-September 1918 the American First Army, fighting alongside French divisions, attacked the salient in its first major operation as an independent American command, and Thiaucourt fell to the advancing troops within days. The fighting left the town and its surrounding fields heavily shelled, and the damage recorded here shows the cost of that brief campaign. For residents who had lived under occupation for years, the battle meant liberation and the end of a front line that had run through their farmland.
