Les Paroches, near Saint-Mihiel in the Meuse valley of northeastern France, sat inside a German-held salient that had been fixed in place since 1914. In September 1918 the American First Army, under General John J. Pershing, attacked the salient in its first major operation as an independent force, and the German line gave way within a few days. Before the war the surrounding countryside had been farmland and small villages, but four years of trench fighting and shelling had cratered the fields and emptied many towns of their residents. For the American soldiers who arrived that summer, the ground was a landscape of ruined villages and roads still busy with supply traffic. Back home in the United States, Saint-Mihiel soon became known as the first large victory of the American Expeditionary Forces.
