Between St. Mihiel and Apermont, in northeastern France, the American First Army launched its first major independent attack of the war on September 12, 1918. The assault pinched out the St. Mihiel salient, a bulge in the front that the German army had held since 1914, and largely cleared it within four days. The success gave General Pershing's divisions confidence for the Meuse-Argonne fighting that opened later that month. Years of shelling had left these hills and villages cratered and stripped, while the roads behind them filled with supply wagons and artillery bound for the front.
