Fresnes-en-Woëvre, a village on the flat Woëvre plain in the Meuse department of northeastern France, was caught in the St. Mihiel salient in 1918. German forces had held the ground since the first autumn of the war in 1914, and the French and villagers who lived under occupation had watched the front harden around them for four years. In September 1918, the American First Army under General John J. Pershing attacked the salient in its first major independent operation, and the advance of September 12 pushed German lines back across the village. The photograph records a landscape of wrecked houses and churchyards, the kind of ruin that the Americans found across the Woëvre, where shelling had reduced many farms and roads to rubble. For the Lorrainers and Meusiens who had been cut off for years, the name of the place meant the front itself.
