St. Mihiel, a small town on the Meuse in northeastern France, had been under German control since 1914, and the salient around it held rail spurs, supply depots, and ammunition stores that backed German lines to the south. In September 1918, the American First Army under General John J. Pershing, fighting alongside French units, attacked the salient in the first major operation an American army led independently in the war. The assault ran from September 12 to 16 and pushed the Germans out within days. American troops then reached the depots the Germans had abandoned, and this photograph records one of those captured dumps.
