Flirey, a village in the Meuse department of northeastern France, lay on the edge of the St. Mihiel salient in 1918, a bulge in the front line that German forces had held since 1914. Before the war its people made their living from farming and small local trades, and by 1918 four years of trench fighting had turned the surrounding countryside into scarred ground. In September, the American First Army under General John J. Pershing attacked the salient, and within about four days German units had withdrawn from most of the ground they had held. The village's ruined houses and torn fields became a lasting symbol of what that autumn cost the civilians who had lived there.
