Montsec, a village in the Meuse department of northeastern France, lay at the heart of the St. Mihiel salient, a bulge in the Allied lines that German troops had held since 1914. The Butte de Montsec, a hill above the village, gave its occupiers wide views of the roads and rail lines behind the front. When the American First Army attacked on September 12, 1918, the height was among its objectives. Before the war this was farming country, and its villages depended on the local roads and rail links. By 1918, years of shelling had left the town in ruins, and the wrecked streets became a sign that the salient had been cleared.
