Torcy, a village near Belleau Wood and the Marne valley town of Château-Thierry, stood in 1918 on ground that had seen some of the war's hardest fighting. Before the war its people had farmed the surrounding plateau and river bottoms, raising grain and tending orchards, and their work followed the seasons. In June 1918 the German advance toward Paris was checked in the fighting at Belleau Wood, where United States Marines suffered heavy casualties, and in the weeks that followed Allied troops pushed through Torcy and the neighboring villages. By the time this view was made, the town had been shelled and badly damaged, and for Americans at home the name Torcy became linked with the battles that turned the summer of 1918.
