Belleau Wood, on the hills west of Château-Thierry in northern France, was the site of one of the bloodiest American engagements of the First World War. In June 1918, Marines of the 2nd Division fought German troops there for several weeks before taking the wood, and the fighting left the ground torn by shell craters and littered with wreckage. By 1919, after the armistice, the Americans who remained in France were still clearing the battlefield, and the surrounding villages of Belleau and Torcy were largely ruins. The wood and its hill were already known across the United States as a symbol of the Marine Corps' sacrifice, and families back home followed news of the dead and the reburials closely.
