Bouresches, a small farming village on the Marne plain near Château-Thierry, lay at the edge of Belleau Wood in the summer of 1918. Its people had long worked the surrounding fields, and the Marne valley was a route between Paris and the eastern frontier. In late May and June 1918, German forces pushed south toward the river during their spring offensive, and American troops, including the 2nd Division and its Marine brigade, were rushed into the line to stop them. Marines fought through the wood in June and took Bouresches on July 1 after bitter house-to-house fighting that left most of the village in ruins. Across the United States, Belleau Wood and Bouresches soon became names associated with the first major American combat in this war.
