In 1918 Château-Thierry was a small market town on the Marne River, on the road to Paris, and it became the center of a German bulge in the Allied lines. The German spring offensive of that year drove south to the Marne in late May, and the salient that bears the town's name marked the deepest point of that advance. American troops, newly arrived in France, were rushed into the fighting there in June, and the Marines' struggle at nearby Belleau Wood became one of the best known episodes of the American effort that summer. The town itself suffered heavy damage from shelling and street fighting. Many people in the United States first learned the name Château-Thierry from newspaper accounts of those weeks, and it became a point of national pride for the American forces.
