In 1918, Jaulny was a farming village in Lorraine, in the St. Mihiel salient, a bulge of German-held ground that had cut into French territory since 1914. For four years the village lay behind German lines, and its residents lived under occupation while the front stayed nearly fixed nearby. The American First Army, under General John J. Pershing, attacked the salient in September 1918, and the village was among the places struck hard in the fighting that followed. A panorama of Jaulny from that year records a community left in ruins, the kind of scene that the American public followed in newspapers as the first major operation led by its own army in the war.
