St. Mihiel, a market town on the Meuse River in Lorraine, had been under German occupation since late 1914, when the front settled into trenches only a few miles away. The salient that bulged around the town was reduced in mid-September 1918 by the American First Army under General John J. Pershing, in the first major offensive planned and led by American forces in the war. Within days the town was back in French hands, and American troops and relief workers moved through streets lined with buildings scarred by four years of shelling and requisition. Residents who had lived under occupation returned to a town where the old square and the Gothic church of Saint-Étienne, home to Ligier Richier's sixteenth-century Entombment, still stood amid wartime damage.
